Eddy Current Testing

Eddy Current uses electromagnetic induction to detect discontinuities in conductive materials.

The flow of the electromagnetic field can be disrupted due to a change in resistivity, conductivity or magnetic permeability of the material. This field disruption is measured against the known values of the original electromagnetic field.

Eddy current can detect very small cracks in or near the surface of the material.

It is also used to:

  • measure coating thicknesses
  • Sort materials (Conductivity measurement)

The biggest advantage of eddy current testing is that the surface requires minimum preparation. So testing can be conducted on painted or coated surfaces.
